Speaker: Janice Phillips, PhD, RN, FAAN, Assoc. Professor for Rush University CON
Phillips presented "Prescription Drug Abuse: Problems, Policies and Implications". Her topic focused on prescription drug abuse emphasizing the role of and need for legislation in addressing the issue of prescription drug abuse. She discussed goals she personally accomplished on Capitol Hill as a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Health Policy. Dr. Phillips also discussed her nursing career as a clinician, researcher, advocate, and educator in health care. One CNE was provided.
March 13, 2013: Northwestern Memorial Hospital
Speaker: Kristine Gleason, M.Ph, R.Ph- Clinical Quality Leader NMH
Gleason discussed “U.S. Healthcare ‘System’ History, Evolution and the role of Nursing in Quality and Patient Safety.” She discussed health insurance and the factors associated with hospitals and reimbursement received. Hospitals are becoming more accountable for quality in patient care, and data is being utilized to improve patient outcomes and improve patient’s perceptions on care. Hospitals are creating quality measures (ie: Acute Myocardial Infarction) to improve performance and outcomes. Together nurses can reduce readmissions and can achieve higher quality of patient care and safety received. One CNE was provided.
